DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of 20 Days in Mariupol\, as a reminder of the ongoing war that Russia is waging against Ukraine. \n\nThe 24th of February 2024 marked 2 years from the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. 20 Days in Mariupol is a documentary which follows Ukrainian Associated Press (AP) journalists who become trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol\, in the South of Ukraine\, at the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion. \nIn late February and early March 2022\, these journalists struggle to continue their work documenting atrocities of the Russian invasion. The last international journalists remaining in the city as Russian forces close in\, they capture what become some of the most defining images of the war: dying children\, mass graves\, the bombing of a maternity hospital\, and more. \n20 Days in Mariupol recently won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. The director dedicated the victory to Ukrainians. Mariupol and other parts of Eastern and Southern Ukraine remain Russian-occupied. Russia also regularly bombs Ukrainian cities\, towns\, and villages\, deliberately attacking and killing civilians. But Ukraine continues to fight for freedom and liberation from Russian destruction\, occupation\, and invasion. \nThis documentary contains graphic images of war that may be disturbing to view. \n\nEntrance is free\, and drinks and snacks will be available at our bar.

DESCRIPTION:This Saturday 6th April at 11am\, we will be joining the Valletta residents in front of Parliament to protest against the current state of Valletta. \nThe occupation of public spaces in Valletta by tables\, chairs and other structures placed on public land by catering outlets has now exceeded all limits. \nDespite there being clear policies that are meant to regulate the operation of outdoor catering areas\, enforcement is largely non-existent. The authorities concerned\, namely the Lands Authority\, the Planning Authority and the MTA are clearly not fit for the job. \nDue to the impunity that reigns in this sector\, the owners of catering establishments are running roughshod over the right of residents to public accessibility and a decent quality of life. The Valletta residents are having to bear to brunt of the unbridled commercialisation of their public spaces. \nAs the Office of the Ombudsman stressed\, the situation is so desperate that emergency vehicles such as ambulances are finding carriageways blocked as they have to squeeze past tables and chairs to get to people in distress. All these illegalities and abuses are making the life of Valletta residents very difficult. \nResidents from other localities who are also facing the same problems\, including Sliema\, Buġibba\, Marsaskala and Mellieħa\, will be joining us for this protest organised by the Valletta residents. \nOur capital city\, which is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site\, is an integral part of our collective cultural heritage and must be protected. SUMMARY:Screening of 'Land and Freedom' in occasion of Dia de la II República
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of Land and Freedom (Tierra y Libertad) on the occasion of the Spanish Dia of II República. \nLand and Freedom is a 1995 film directed by Ken Loach and written by Jim Allen. It narrates the story of a British communist unemployed worker who decides to join the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans were a coalition of democratic parties and ideologies including communists\, socialists and anarchists\, against a fascist coup d’état of Spanish militaries supported by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. \nEl Dia de la II República\, Day of the Second Spanish Republic\, takes place yearly on the 14th of April. On that day in 1931\, following democratic elections and the abdication and exile of King Alphonso XIII\, the Second Republic was declared. \nIt was a democratic period with various progressive and conservative governments that achieved significant advancements such as granting women the right to vote\, implementing major educational initiatives\, supporting cultural and scientific endeavours\, challenging the privileges of the Church\, and promoting a plurinational state among others. This period was suddenly interrupted by a coup d’état in 1936\, which initiated a three-year civil war leaving more than 500.000 people dead and resulting in a fascist dictatorship that lasted 38 years. \nEntrance is free\, and drinks and nibbles will be available.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Italian Liberation Day to remember the resistance against nazi-fascism and celebrate the spirit of anti-fascism. On April 25th\, Italy commemorates the fall of the nazi-fascist regime and the victory of partisan groups that had waged an armed struggle against it. \nThe victory of anti-fascist freedom fighters became a potent symbol that inspired generations of Italians and beyond. \nThe event will start at 6pm with drinks and Italian resistance songs. \nAt 7:30pm\, we will screen the movie ‘The Seven Cervi Brothers’ (1968) directed by Gianni Puccini with the assistance of Gianni Amelio (language: Italian with English subtitles). The movie is based on the true story of seven brothers and their family who\, in the context of both economic exploitation as well as the Second World War\, become anti-fascists and join the partisan movement. \nEntrance is free.

Tables and chairs placed by catering establishments have clogged up our pavements\, streets\, squares\, and even our coast\, trampling over our basic right to safe and unobstructed public access. \nThe so-called balance that the authorities always emphasise is evidently not being achieved\, and the dire consequences of this are being felt by the residents of localities besieged by commercial interests. Enforcement is non-existent\, and the authorities responsible for this mess\, namely the Planning Authority\, the Lands Authority\, and the Malta Tourism Authority\, are refusing to protect our interests\, allowing the abuse of public land to go on unimpeded instead. We believe that the time has come to seriously address this state of affairs. \nOn Saturday 27th April we invite you to join us for a press conference that will launch the Il-Bankini taċ-Ċittadini campaign. We shall be meeting in Merchants Street (next to MUŻA) at 10.30am. \nDifferent resident groups hailing from several localities\, among which Valletta\, Tas-Sliema\, Marsaskala\, Buġibba and Mellieħa\, will be joining us for this press conference. Together with them we have prepared a document with several demands meant to provide solutions to the problems brought about by the encroachment on public spaces. We will be officially presenting this document during this press conference in hope that the authorities listen to the residents’ pleas and take immediate action. \n\nWe encourage you to join us and these residents to take a stand and make our voices heard against the abuse and theft of public land!
