SUMMARY:Press Conference - Stop the Abuse\, Close Mediterraneo Marine Park
DESCRIPTION: Join us outside of the Veterinary and Phytosanitary Regulation Division at 10:30am on Saturday\, the 22nd of October\, in a press conference where we will be demanding the closure and the revoking of the license of the Mediterraneo Marine Park\, in order to end the capturing\, training and mistreatment of dolphins\, which ultimately led to the demise of 3 of them last year. \nLet’s put a stop to this before there can be more deaths of these incredible intellectual creatures. \n The Veterinary and Phytosanitary Regulation Division (VRD) concluded that the deaths were ‘a pure accident.’ \n However\, the Office of the Commissioner for Animal Welfare’s investigation concluded that the VRD’s own investigation was only carried out after the Commissioner’s inquiries\, nine months after the dolphins’ deaths\, and before February 2022\, “no event-specific measures were taken by the VRD\, and the Mediterraneo Marine Park was allowed to go about its business as usual.” \n The Office of the Commissioner for Animal Welfare concluded that “a degree of negligence was involved on more than one occasion\,” as attested to by the park’s own statement. We refuse to accept this negligence. \n This event is organized by Moviment Graffitti and Animal Liberation Malta\, and endorsed by AAA\, Island Sanctuary\, Animal Protectors Malta\, Nature Trust Malta\, Real Animal Rights Foundation (RAR)\, Extinction Rebellion Malta\, Animal Guardians Malta\, CSAF\, Noah’s Ark Sanctuary\, Dolphin Project\, MSPCA\, FAA\, BICREF and Marine Connection UK.

DESCRIPTION:Ingħaqdu magħna quddiem il-Parlament nhar it-Tnejn\, 3 ta’ Ottubru fil-5.00 p.m. għal konferenza stampa fejn se nkunu qegħdin nitolbu li l-liġi dwar il-bilanċ bejn ix-xogħol u l-ħajja privata tiġi mtejba. \nKtibna fit-tul dwar ir-raġunijiet għalfejn din il-liġi ma tkoprix biżżejjed il-ħtiġijiet tal-familji tagħna\, inkluż ittra li bgħatna lill-MP Dr Andy Ellul (ara hawn: https://bit.ly/3BRlQxF). Fit-tweġiba tiegħu Dr Ellul ma qabel ma l-ebda punt li għamilna imma qal li l-Gvern għandu l-intenzjoni li jibni fuq miżuri bħal dawn biex itejjeb il-kwalità tal-ħajja. Li qegħdin nitolbu huwa li mill-kliem niġu għall-fatti mill-iktar fis possibbli. Il-familji tagħna ħaqqhom aħjar. \nDin l-attività hija organizzata mill-Moviment Graffitti u għandha l-appoġġ tal-Malta Women’s Lobby\, National Parents Society of Persons with Disability (NPSPD)\, Maltese Daddy\, aditus foundation\, Women’s Rights Foundation u MGRM. \n****** \nJoin us outside Parliament at 5pm on Monday\, 3rd October for a press conference where we will be demanding that the Work-Life Balance law be revisited with the aim of improving it. \nWe have written at length about why this law does not go far enough for our families\, including a letter addressed to MP Dr Andy Ellul (see here: https://bit.ly/3BRlQxF). In his reply\, Dr Ellul disagreed with all our points but said the Government intends to build on measures such as these to improve quality of life. We ask that he put words to action sooner rather than later. Our families deserve better. \nThis event is organised by Moviment Graffitti and endorsed by the Malta Women’s Lobby\, the National Parents Society of Persons with Disability (NPSPD)\, Maltese Daddy\, aditus foundation\, Women’s Rights Foundation and MGRM.

We also strongly encourage you to bring your own food and plenty of water\, so as not to give business to the many kiosks that have also taken over the area and ruined the atmosphere of the place with loud music. \nWhy are we going to Comino again \n After our first action to reclaim the Blue Lagoon from deckchair operators back in June\, we hoped the government would take significant action to limit the over-commercialisation that has effectively turned this paradise into a private lido. \n Sadly\, the only action the authorities have taken is to ban deckchairs from the small sandy beach\, a token gesture intended to sweep all the other problems on Comino under the carpet. \n What’s more\, two letters we sent to the five ministers who are responsible for the management of Comino have been left unanswered\, while tourism minister Clayton Bartolo deflected questions on the matter put to him in parliament. \n And so we head to Comino – this time with the public by our side – to reiterate our demands and show that we will not be ignored.

SUMMARY:Maternity\, Paternity\, and Parental Leave in Malta - Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Maternity\, paternity and parental leave in Malta: Where are we and where do we want to go? \nMoviment Graffitti is organising a panel discussion about the current situation regarding maternity\, paternity and parental leave. What are they at the moment? Are they adequate? What are the difficulties faced by parents with newborns and young children? What is the situation in other EU countries? What could be implemented to improve the current situation? We feel that the issue of family caring is not being discussed and explored enough. The aim of this panel discussion is to start sharing insights and challenges around family care and leave in Malta from an intersectional perspective. \nWe would also be exploring specific difficulties faced by the migrant community and third-country national parents living in Malta. \nIn addition\, EU countries are committed to implement some new work-life adjustments\, including longer and paid paternity leave and paid parental leave. An EU directive on parental leave has been issued in August 2019 and all countries are obliged to transpose this to national law until August 2022. So why is the Maltese government dragging its feet and why hasn’t it even started discussing this directive with the public? \nIn this event\, we will be screening a short clip from the midwifery team at Positive Birth Malta. The panel discussion will be in person. Lawyer Carla Camilleri from aditus Foundation\, Dr Anna Borg from the Centre for Labour Studies\, University of Malta\, and Karen Buttigieg from the National Parents Society for Persons with Disability\, will be speaking in the panel discussion.

SUMMARY:Remembering the Palestinian Nakba
DESCRIPTION: 15 May marks the Palestinian Nakba – the catastrophe – when Zionist militias killed and terrorised Palestinians to make way for the creation of the Israeli state. These acts of ethnic cleansing in 1948 led to the forcible expulsion of 800\,000 Palestinians from their homes and lands. Most of their descendants are living in refugee camps to this day\, whilst the Nakba continues for the those living in Palestine through everyday violence and oppression perpetrated by the State of Israel. \n Moviment Graffitti and the Embassy of Palestine – Malta will remember the 74th year from the Nakba\, this Sunday in Valletta. The event will start with a short talk on the significance of the Nakba\, followed by two short movies about injustice in Palestine\, past and present. \n We will then have Palestinian food and music. \nEveryone is welcome to join us. We will be joined by historians and biologists\, who will be talking to us about the importance of this place\, its plants and animals\, and its historical relics. \n Everyone is welcome to attend. This is an ideal activity for children because it will give them the opportunity to cherish what we have left of our country’s natural and historical heritage. Feel free to bring food and drinks for a picnic and posters in support of our open spaces. \n Contrary to what promoters of the project have said\, the airstrip will take natural and agricultural land located around the cliffs and the valley. The airstrip project will destroy the garigue and fields on which it will be built but will also break the serenity of the area with light and noise pollution. \nWe are insisting that the site\, which has been included as part of the industrial zone\, be designated as ODZ so that it can be enjoyed by the public\, used by the farmers and serve as a buffer zone to the Natura 2000 site. \n See you on Sunday 15th May for our walking tour in appreciation of the environment and history of Wied Żnuber surroundings and in show of our opposition to the plans threatening it.

SUMMARY:Lassana Cisse - The 3rd Anniversary of his Murder
DESCRIPTION:Next Wednesday\, we will be marking the third anniversary of the murder of Lassana Cisse. \n In 2019\, Lassana was killed in cold blood while walking home – allegedly by two members of the Armed Forces of Malta – for the crime of being a black man. \n While his alleged murderers enjoy their freedom while out on bail\, Lassana’s family are still unable to take his body back to his native Ivory Coast for burial due to COVID-related bureaucracy. Two other migrants injured in the same attack are also still waiting for justice. \n Lassana’s brutal murder should have been a wake-up call for the Government to end once and for all its divisive rhetoric and discriminatory policies that stigmatise Africans seeking asylum for the sake of pandering to racists. Instead\, three years later\, the authorities are refusing to provide a safe haven to a ship carrying 106 desperate human beings\, all while preparing to welcome the Pope and show off our Christian values. \n Join us in front of the Law Courts to make sure Lassana’s name\, and the injustices still faced by his fellow migrants\, are not forgotten.

Iżda xorta waħda nħossu l-ħtieġa li fil-ġranet li ġejjin tintwera l-imħabba tan-nies għal dan il-post u l-oppożizzjoni tagħhom għall-pjan tal-mitjar. \n Għalhekk\, minflok il-mixja\, ser niltaqgħu nhar it-Tlieta 22 ta’ Marzu fis-6pm fil-pjazza tal-knisja ta’ Birżebbuġa għal attività simbolika favur il-ħarsien ta’ Wied Żnuber. \nĠentilment nitolbukom ixxerrdu l-kelma. \n Kulħadd huwa mistieden iġib miegħu messaġġi f’forma ta’ stampi jew kitba favur il-ħarsien tal-wied\, l-irdum u l-madwar tagħhom minn kull żvilupp qerriedi. \nMatul din l-attività ser intennu t-talbiet tagħna li: \n Il-pjanijiet għall-mitjar fiż-żona ta’ Wied Żnuber jiġu rtirati minnufih. \n Is-sit inkwistjoni\, li kien ġie inkluż bħala parti miż-żona industrijali\, jiġi desinjat bħala ODZ ħalli jkun jista’ jkompli jitgawda mill-pubbliku\, jintuża mill-bdiewa u jservi ta’ buffer zone għas-sit tan-Natura 2000. \nNarawkom nhar it-Tlieta 22 ta’ Marzu fis-6pm fil-pjazza tal-knisja ta’ Birżebbuġa. \n****** \n Due to forecast of heavy winds\, we regretfully cancel the walk of Saturday 19 March around the site where there are current plans for a miniature airstrip in Wied Żnuber. We nevertheless feel that people should still be given the chance to come and show their love for this place and stand against the airstrip. \n So please come and meet us on Tuesday the 22nd of March at 6pm at the parish square of Birżeb-buġa for a symbolic event to save Wied Żnuber. \nPlease spread the word. \n Everyone is invited to bring with them posters and placards with written messages supporting the protection of Wied Żnuber\, the cliffs and surroundings from destructive development. \nDuring this activity we will reiterate our call for: \n The plan for an airstrip in the area of Wied Żnuber to be immediately withdrawn. \n The site\, which has been included as part of the industrial zone\, be designated as ODZ so that it can be enjoyed by the public\, used by the farmers and serve as a buffer zone to the Natura 2000 site.

Ħadd ma kien ġie ikkonsultat dwar dan il-proġett li mistenni jkollu impatti ambjentali u soċjali kbar. \n Ir-residenti u l-għaqdiet se jispjegaw li\, filwaqt li huma jirrispettaw lil min għandu d-delizzju tat-titjir tal-mudelli tal-ajruplani\, pjan ta’ dan it-tip m’għandux isir askapitu tal-ambjent naturali u tal-ispazji miftuħa tagħna. \n Kulħadd huwa mistieden jattendi l-Konferenza Stampa. \n****** \nPRESS CONFERENCE – SAVE WIED ŻNUBER \n Residents of Birżebbuġa\, together with various organisations\, are calling a press conference on Saturday 5th March at 10:30am at the Birzebbuġa parish square to explain their opposition to the massive project in the area of Wied Żnuber \n Wied Żnuber is threatened by plans to develop an airstrip for model aeroplanes that will involve the burying of large areas of garigue\, a long strip of tarmac\, the construction of a clubhouse\, as well as both noise and light pollution that will destroy the serenity of the valley and cliffs. This site and its surroundings are part of the Natura 2000 network – meaning that the authorities themselves recognise it as being ecology sensitive. It is home to various protected species of flora and fauna\, as well as historical sites. \n The project will also result in several farmers being evicted from their fields. \n The plans for this mini-airport were announced several weeks ago after an agreement was signed between the INDIS government agency and model aeroplane enthusiast associations. No other stakeholders or organisations were consulted on a project that is expected to have a significant environmental and social impact. \n Residents and organisations will explain that while they respect model aeroplane hobbyists\, such plans should not go ahead at the expense of our environment and open spaces. \n The press conference is open to all who wish to attend.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for another Film Night at the Moviment Graffitti Premises on Saturday 26th February. Doors open at 6pm\, while the film starts at 6.30pm. \nWe will be screening the film ‘Persepolis’ (2007)\, based on the beautifully animated biographical graphic novel of Marjane Satrapi who recounts her life in pre and post-revolutionary Iran and then in Europe. \nThe film traces Satrapi’s growth from a child to a rebellious\, punk-loving teenager in Iran. Il-Kunsill jeżiġi li dan id-dokument għandu jkun irtirat immedjatament u tiġi abbundnata l-idea ta’ konċessjoni ta’ yacht marina f’Marsaskala. Minnufih Transport Malta għandha tidħol f’diskussjonijiet mal-Kunsill u mar-residenti ta’ Marsaskala u l-għaqdiet tal-lokal għall-organizzazzjoni tal-irmiġġi eżistenti\, għall-ħarsien komplut tad-drawwiet kulturali u soċjali tal-lokal\, il-ħarsien tal-ambjent marittimu u b’mod li jiġu ssalvagwardjati ż-żoni tal-għawm fil-bajja”. \n L-Iskalin urew biċ-ċar u ripetutatment li ma jridu ebda Yacht Marina fil-lokalità. Is-serq ta’ bajja u xtajta pubblika minn mijiet ta’ jottijiet se jservi biss biex jinqdew l-interessi tal-ftit\, filwaqt li se jifga lill-Iskalin u lil eluf oħra li regolarment iżuru dan il-post u l-madwar. Il-proġett se jfisser ukoll qerda ambjentali kbira. Transport Malta trid tordom parti kbira minn qiegħ il-baħar – id-daqs ta’ żewġ grawnds u nofs tal-futbol – permezz ta’ reklamazzjoni tal-art f’diversi partijiet tal-bajja. \n Waqt il-Konferenza Stampa se nispejgaw dak li intqal fil-laqgħa bejn il-Ministru Borg u l-Kunsill Lokali\, u kif fid-dawl ta’ dak li ħareġ minn din il-laqgħa m’hemm ebda triq oħra ħlief li jitwaqqaf il-proċess li bih il-bajja ta’ Wied il-Għajn se tinbidel f’Yacht Marina. \n Ingħaqdu mar-residenti Skalin nhar is-Sibt fl-10:30am qrib il-bandli ta’ Wied il-Għajn\, sabiex inkomplu niddefendu l-ispazji miftuħa u l-ambjent tagħna. \n****** \n On Saturday at 10:30am\, we will be gathering in Marsaskala to announce important developments regarding plans for a yacht marina in the local bay. \n The Local Council of Marsaskala has met again to unanimously confirm its August motion against the marina. This meeting follows a January meeting with Minister Borg. \n The August motion says that “The Local Council is against the proposal for a yacht marina in Marsaskala\, presented in Transport Malta’s pre-qualification document and condemns its publication without consultation with the Marsaskala community. The Local Council demands that this document be withdrawn immediately and that plans for a yacht marina in Marsaskala be abandoned completely. Transport Malta should launch immediate discussions with the Local Council\, with residents of Marsaskala and with the local associations\, for the organisation of existing berths\, for the protection of the cultural and social customs of the locality\, the protection of the marine environment and for safeguarding the swimming zones of the bay.” \n Marsaskala residents have clearly and repeatedly shown that they do not want a yacht marina in their locality. Robbing the public of its beach for hundreds of yachts clearly serves the interests of the few\, while suffocating residents and thousands of others who regularly visit this place and its surroundings. The project will spell major environmental destruction. By reclaiming land in various parts of the bay\, Transport Malta plans to erode a large section of the seabed\, the size of which equals two and a half football pitches. \n The Press Conference will focus on the meeting between Minister Borg and the Local Council\, and how in the light of this meeting’s outcomes\, there is no other way forward but halting existing plans to turn Marsaskala Bay into a yacht marina. \n Join residents near the Marsaskala swings on Saturday at 10:30am to defend our open spaces and our environment.
