DESCRIPTION:Join us for an open discussion on the state of women’s health in Malta\, their struggles and the presence of sexist attitudes in the medical sectors. \nWe will meet on the 27th of May\, the eve of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health\, at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta at 6:30pm. \nThe discussion will begin with informative presentations focusing on endometriosis\, delivered by Dr Angelika Biernacka Buttigieg and PhD researcher Martina Haber. Afterwards\, the public is invited to share personal experiences related to endometriosis or other women’s health issues. Attendees are also welcome to ask questions\, express impressions or concerns\, and share ideas for overcoming the limitations of the current medical system. \nEntrance is free. Please note that the event takes place on the first floor and access is via stairs. \nFollowing the discussion\, we will share some nibbles and drinks.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community discussion on the anti-gender movement\, led by Maïté de Haan\, Belgian policy officer for the LGBTQI+ rights advocacy organization Çavaria. \nThe rise of the anti-gender movement has significant implications for LGBTQI+ rights\, women’s rights\, and sexual and reproductive rights. What exactly is this movement? Why does it exist? Who are the key actors\, and how do they work to influence society? \nIn this event we’ll examine their strategies\, motivations\, and the broader impacts of their activities. Together\, we’ll explore how we can work collectively to protect and advance gender equality and human rights in the face of these challenges. Maïté’s presentation will be followed by a discussion and a moment to share food\, drinks\, and conversations. \nWe’re meeting Thursday 22nd of May at 6:30 pm\, 67 Strait Street\, Valletta (Moviment Graffitti premises). \nMaïté (they/them) is a philosopher and policy officer in Belgium for Çavaria\, the LGBTQI+ rights advocacy organization. They work on a project titled “Gender Coalition.” This project is funded by the Institute for Equality between Women and Men in Belgium.

DESCRIPTION:All lesbians\, sapphics\, and allies are invited to join us on Friday 25th April at 18:00 for a Zine-making workshop in honour of Lesbian Visibility Day\, which is typically held on the 26th. Lesbian Visibility Day is dedicated to the awareness of lesbians\, their issues\, and their importance in queer history. \nTo commemorate this day\, this year we will be holding a zine workshop to pay tribute to the riot grrrl culture and its connection to lesbians. We will meet at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta at 18:00. \nThis event will be facilitated by Lana and Elio\, who will give a short presentation about riot grrrl & queer history and a demonstration on making your own zines accompanied by queer music and good vibes. \nWe will be providing some magazines\, markers\, lino stamps\, glue\, crafts knives and papers\, but each are encouraged to bring their own supplies as we may be limited. \ne will provide some snacks to share but feel free to bring your own. This will be a free event\, but a small donation would be appreciated.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 18:00 on Friday\, 28 March\, in front of the Safi Detention Centre in order to stand in solidarity with our detained brothers and sisters. \nVulnerable people are being detained for up to two years in degrading\, unhygienic conditions without adequate access to legal aid or contact with the outside world. \nVulnerable people\, women and children\, LGBTQ+ individuals\, migrants traumatised by shipwreck\, and people with special needs should never be imprisoned. \nWe call on the authorities to: \n\nRelease all vulnerable persons and children from detention immediately\, including members of our LGBTQ+ community;\nIncrease transparency at Safi and allow NGOs and legal counsels greater access;\nHalt the practice of detaining people for extended periods of time who pose no threat to the community;\nExpand the use of alternatives to detention that are already well-established in Malta;\nHalt the raids that target long-standing members of our community\, whilst providing a pathway for those that remain undocumented to regularise their status.\n\n  \nWe cannot abide and standby as the authorities imprison vulnerable members of our community for years on end in inhuman and degrading conditions without access to adequate legal aid. \nWe firmly believe that all people\, not least children and vulnerable members of our communities\, deserve liberty\, the right to speedy due process and the right to a dignified existence.

This year’s title underlines how women from different social backgrounds\, economic conditions\, and diverse countries share the same struggles. \nOur focus this year is on reproductive justice – the right to not have children\, the right to have children\, and the right to parent children in safe\, healthy\, and sustainable environments. We know that contraception is not accessible enough\, abortion is criminalised\, people with conditions like endometriosis lack care\, and not everyone can afford period products. \nFor people who want to have children – is there enough support? Are people financially stable to be able to have and raise children? Pollution\, over-construction\, lack of green spaces – all of this relates to reproductive justice. \nBeyond reproductive justice\, we cannot ignore women’s everyday reality – facing sexism\, harassment\, stalking\, rape\, verbal and physical violence\, misogynistic comments\, an unjust pay gap and unfair sharing of parenting and housework. Sometimes these are very obvious\, sometimes they are more subtle\, which makes it harder to denounce and address these issues. \nWe must also continue to remember the femicides committed in Malta over the past years. We call for those in power to create meaningful change\, and work towards societal transformation. \nWe – women\, non-binary people\, trans people\, and allies – can use our voices to fight together against gender oppression\, on a symbolic day like Women’s Day\, as well as every day\, everywhere\, for every woman. \nWe will meet at Triton Fountain in Floriana\, walk through Valletta\, and gather in St. George’s Square to have speeches\, songs by the Re-sisters Choir\, and a community dance performance by Fran Zammit\, supported by the Department of Dance Studies at the University of Malta.

It explores the challenges that people in Malta\, Italy\, and Poland face when trying to access abortions. The documentary also highlights the solidarity shown by national and international groups\, who work together to ensure self-determination and access to reproductive rights. \nMarianna Fumai is an author\, film editor\, and director. She is also an educator\, an intersectional feminist\, and a reproductive rights activist. She visited Malta in 2019 to meet with abortion rights activists and to witness the first Safe Abortion Day Rally. \nAfter the screening\, the director will be online with us for some questions about the documentary. The public has the right to know the facts about the project to be able to form an informed opinion. \nFor instance\, will the public be able to access Fort Chambray once it is developed? Who will be financially responsible for the Fort’s restoration\, the Government or the developers? Are the Fort’s clay foundations stable enough for such a massive development? What will become of the British Barracks? \nJoin us on Saturday 8 February at 10.30am for a public talk where we will be answering these questions and more.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday 29th January at 6.30pm\, at our premises at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta. \nAll Moviment Graffitti members and the general public are invited to participate at the meeting\, where we will present an administrative review\, looking back on the past year and share our plans for 2025. \nThis is your opportunity to discuss ideas and present suggestions for the future\, while giving input on our direction. \n\nThe meeting is expected to take around one hour and a half and drinks and snacks will be available. We look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Aħna Pożittivi - World AIDS Day Rally 2024
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, 1st December\, Moviment Graffitti will be joining other organisations to commemorate World AIDS Day. This is an international day of remembrance for all those lost to the AIDS epidemic. \n\n To mark this day\, a coalition of organisations\, Checkpoint Malta\, HIV Malta\, MGRM\, Moviment Graffitti\, LGBTI+ Gozo\, Allied Rainbow Communities – ARC and aditus\, will be organising We Are Positive: Time for Action – World AIDS Day Rally\, at Castille Square in Valletta at 11.00 a.m.\n The aim of the rally is to give visibility to HIV\, to fight the stigma that still surrounds HIV\, and to give a human face to HIV. The rally will also emphasise the importance of testing for HIV since that is the only way that HIV can be managed. Not knowing one’s status and not taking medication will lead to advanced HIV (AIDS).\nPeople living with HIV face a great deal of stigma to the extent that they often keep their status a secret. As a result\, they have very few sources of support. Additionally\, there is very little public awareness about this topic. Not many people may know that nowadays\, with regular medication\, the virus is controlled to the extent that it cannot be passed on to others during sex. Therefore people with HIV who have access to medication can live long and healthy lives. Therefore\, the coalition believes that HIV medication should be accessible to everyone regardless of nationality and residency status.\n The organisations will also remind the government that it has yet to fulfil its electoral promise of providing free preventive medication\, PrEP and PEP for those who are at risk of contracting HIV and spreading it to others. Malta has one of the highest HIV diagnoses in Europe and there are hundreds of people living with HIV in Malta.\n\nCome and join us in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

DESCRIPTION:25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Moviment Graffitti\, along with MGRM and YPB\, are organizing a demonstration in front of the Law Courts on Sunday 24th at 3:30pm as resistance to this violence that women face every day\, and to empower women to take a stand against our culture of violence. \nWe are protesting the pervasive culture of violence that is normalised\, in Malta and worldwide\, – the visible and the violence behind closed doors\, the violence concealed behind jokes and the femicides we hear about far too late. For all the women who have been made fun of\, catcalled\, harassed\, and killed. \nBe part of the fight against gender-based violence\, which affects mostly women and girls\, but also non-binary and trans people. You are encouraged to bring your placards and energy against this patriarchal violence.

DESCRIPTION:Moviment Graffitti’s Banda are indubitably an iconic part of our history – drumming up beats of resistance in the numerous protests and rallies over the years. As part of Moviment Graffitti’s 30th anniversary celebrations\, our Banda members will be hosting a workshop on the 21st of November at 18:30. \nIt will be held in the exhibition space\, at Società Dante Alighieri at 134\, Old Bakery Street (a few doors down from Drunken Dumpling). \nThe workshop will go through the basics of protest drumming\, including the different sounds and types of drums\, communication signals while drumming\, and of course drumming a short rhythm. \nNo previous skills are required and anyone is welcome to join. The workshop is free\, and donations to Moviment Graffitti are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of ‘Herself’ on 20th November at 18:30\, in the lead up to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. \nThe 2020 film\, directed by Phyllida Lloyd\, follows Sandra\, a single mother who leaves and moves away from her abusive partner. She struggles to move on independently with her two young daughters\, but is determined to find her own way. The film’s title may suggest that Sandra ends up building her future alone\, however this impactful story explores how she succeeds with the help of others. \nAfter the screening\, we will have a brief discussion about the film and relating to violence against women in the local context\, followed by some drinks and nibbles. \nEntrance is free\, and you are welcome to bring snacks or purchase drinks from the bar! \n\nSee you there!
