After a short walk through Miżieb\, we encourage the public to stay and picnic. \nThe authorities tried to steal 1.5 million m2 of public land for the benefit of a select few. \n They failed. \nThis is because NGOs fought tooth and nail so that the woodlands of Miżieb and L-Aħrax remain accessible to all. \nWe are determined to make sure everyone can continue to enjoy these public spaces that are so important to society.

SUMMARY:Fit-Triq Bla Biza' - Reclaim the Night
DESCRIPTION: Every year\, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women\, we come together to raise awareness on the violence which women experience in its many physical\, sexual and psychological forms. \n This violence encompasses street harassment\, cyber harassment\, psychological abuse\, unwanted sexual advances\, rape\, femicide\, human trafficking\, child marriage and female genital mutilation. Stopping this violence starts by (but doesn’t stop at) listening to and believing women. \n This year we are marching to Reclaim the Night (Fit-Triq bla Biża’). This is the first such march being held in Malta. We will be marching to show resistance and demand our right to move safely in public spaces\, no matter the time\, the place and what we are wearing. \n We will gather on Friday 2nd December at the LOVE Monument in St. Julian’s at 18.30\, and then march together along the front. As part of the event\, we will share stories about the personal experiences of women and the daily violence which we face. \n We are inviting you all to submit your stories here (https://bit.ly/3THdgcE). Submissions can be anonymous and you may also read out your own story on the day. Wasal iż-żmien li jittieħdu l-passi meħtieġa biex il-vjolenza domestika tiġi indirizzata bis-serjetà u bla dewmien. \n Ingħaqdu magħna quddiem il-Kwartieri tal-Pulizija fil-Furjana biex nitolbu li l-vjolenza kontra n-nisa tinqered darba għal dejjem. \n****** \n This Friday\, 25th November\, is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. \n It takes place just days after another woman was brutally murdered\, allegedly by her former partner\, outside her workplace. \n This Friday\, we are meeting outside the Police Headquarters in Floriana\, walk towards Triton Fountain\, then through Republic Street and finish in front of the Law Courts. \n We’re meeting outside the Police Headquarters in Floriana\, since Bernice Cassar was just here\, two weeks ago\, filing another police report after her former husband threatened her for the umpteenth time. She also filed a report about her aggressor’s threats last Monday. \n The next day\, Bernice was shot outside her workplace and her former husband is the only suspect in the case. \n Bernice Cassar was shot after filing multiple reports for police protection. A court case regarding her estranged husband holding a knife to her throat was scheduled to start a year from now\, because of large court workloads and court delays. \nThis Friday\, we are meeting to ask the authorities to take responsibility for this gross failure. \n Every delay in court procedure kills women. It’s time to ensure that domestic violence is acted upon properly and swiftly. \n Join us outside the Police HQ in Floriana to ask for violence against women to be eliminated once and for all.

SUMMARY:Protesta - Park tal-Moħqrija\, Battlu t-Tankijiet!
DESCRIPTION: We invite you to join us in protest against the Mediterraneo Marine Park on Saturday 19 November 2022 at 10:30am to demand the revocation of the Park’s licence and its permanent closure in order to end our country’s role in the capture\, training\, and mistreatment of dolphins and other marine mammals. \n We will hold a short march outside the Park’s perimeter and end close towards the entrance. The starting point will be near the ice-cream kiosk\, here: https://goo.gl/maps/oEsw6tTFk33uEr8x8 \nWhy are we protesting \n Last year\, under mysterious circumstances\, three of the Park’s dolphins died. Their death was kept secret\, but after the Office of the Commissioner for Animal Welfare launched an investigation\, this summer it was revealed that the three dolphins died of lead poisoning while under the Park’s care. Since the authorities have not acted on our demands\, we will be reiterating them again together with the public. \n Dolphins should not be held in captivity for entertainment\, nor should they be bred\, bought or exchanged like some commodity. \nThe death of these three dolphins is solely a result of the Park’s negligence. While Mediterraneo has claimed that this was a one-off accident\, there have been eight other deceased dolphins\, one of which (Pinu) died very young\, and the cause of his death is as yet not public. \n Mediterraneo Marine Park Malta is nothing more than a poorly disguised circus\, whose interests are solely financial. Animal circuses have been banned in Malta since 2014\, and the constant shows and performances put on at the Park are like those that would be seen in a circus not a zoo. The Park has no role in conservation or rehabilitation\, much less education. DESCRIPTION: Join us outside of the Veterinary and Phytosanitary Regulation Division at 10:30am on Saturday\, the 22nd of October\, in a press conference where we will be demanding the closure and the revoking of the license of the Mediterraneo Marine Park\, in order to end the capturing\, training and mistreatment of dolphins\, which ultimately led to the demise of 3 of them last year. \nLet’s put a stop to this before there can be more deaths of these incredible intellectual creatures. \n The Veterinary and Phytosanitary Regulation Division (VRD) concluded that the deaths were ‘a pure accident.’ \n However\, the Office of the Commissioner for Animal Welfare’s investigation concluded that the VRD’s own investigation was only carried out after the Commissioner’s inquiries\, nine months after the dolphins’ deaths\, and before February 2022\, “no event-specific measures were taken by the VRD\, and the Mediterraneo Marine Park was allowed to go about its business as usual.” \n The Office of the Commissioner for Animal Welfare concluded that “a degree of negligence was involved on more than one occasion\,” as attested to by the park’s own statement. In his reply\, Dr Ellul disagreed with all our points but said the Government intends to build on measures such as these to improve quality of life. We ask that he put words to action sooner rather than later. We also strongly encourage you to bring your own food and plenty of water\, so as not to give business to the many kiosks that have also taken over the area and ruined the atmosphere of the place with loud music. \nWhy are we going to Comino again \n After our first action to reclaim the Blue Lagoon from deckchair operators back in June\, we hoped the government would take significant action to limit the over-commercialisation that has effectively turned this paradise into a private lido. \n Sadly\, the only action the authorities have taken is to ban deckchairs from the small sandy beach\, a token gesture intended to sweep all the other problems on Comino under the carpet. \n What’s more\, two letters we sent to the five ministers who are responsible for the management of Comino have been left unanswered\, while tourism minister Clayton Bartolo deflected questions on the matter put to him in parliament. \n And so we head to Comino – this time with the public by our side – to reiterate our demands and show that we will not be ignored.

SUMMARY:Maternity\, Paternity\, and Parental Leave in Malta - Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Maternity\, paternity and parental leave in Malta: Where are we and where do we want to go? \nMoviment Graffitti is organising a panel discussion about the current situation regarding maternity\, paternity and parental leave. What are they at the moment? Are they adequate? What are the difficulties faced by parents with newborns and young children? What is the situation in other EU countries? What could be implemented to improve the current situation? We feel that the issue of family caring is not being discussed and explored enough. The aim of this panel discussion is to start sharing insights and challenges around family care and leave in Malta from an intersectional perspective. \nWe would also be exploring specific difficulties faced by the migrant community and third-country national parents living in Malta. \nIn addition\, EU countries are committed to implement some new work-life adjustments\, including longer and paid paternity leave and paid parental leave. An EU directive on parental leave has been issued in August 2019 and all countries are obliged to transpose this to national law until August 2022. SUMMARY:Remembering the Palestinian Nakba
DESCRIPTION: 15 May marks the Palestinian Nakba – the catastrophe – when Zionist militias killed and terrorised Palestinians to make way for the creation of the Israeli state. These acts of ethnic cleansing in 1948 led to the forcible expulsion of 800\,000 Palestinians from their homes and lands. Most of their descendants are living in refugee camps to this day\, whilst the Nakba continues for the those living in Palestine through everyday violence and oppression perpetrated by the State of Israel. \n Moviment Graffitti and the Embassy of Palestine – Malta will remember the 74th year from the Nakba\, this Sunday in Valletta. The event will start with a short talk on the significance of the Nakba\, followed by two short movies about injustice in Palestine\, past and present. \n We will then have Palestinian food and music. \nEveryone is welcome to join us. We will be joined by historians and biologists\, who will be talking to us about the importance of this place\, its plants and animals\, and its historical relics. \n Everyone is welcome to attend. This is an ideal activity for children because it will give them the opportunity to cherish what we have left of our country’s natural and historical heritage. Feel free to bring food and drinks for a picnic and posters in support of our open spaces. \n Contrary to what promoters of the project have said\, the airstrip will take natural and agricultural land located around the cliffs and the valley. The airstrip project will destroy the garigue and fields on which it will be built but will also break the serenity of the area with light and noise pollution. \nWe are insisting that the site\, which has been included as part of the industrial zone\, be designated as ODZ so that it can be enjoyed by the public\, used by the farmers and serve as a buffer zone to the Natura 2000 site. \n See you on Sunday 15th May for our walking tour in appreciation of the environment and history of Wied Żnuber surroundings and in show of our opposition to the plans threatening it.

SUMMARY:Lassana Cisse - The 3rd Anniversary of his Murder
DESCRIPTION:Next Wednesday\, we will be marking the third anniversary of the murder of Lassana Cisse. \n In 2019\, Lassana was killed in cold blood while walking home – allegedly by two members of the Armed Forces of Malta – for the crime of being a black man. \n While his alleged murderers enjoy their freedom while out on bail\, Lassana’s family are still unable to take his body back to his native Ivory Coast for burial due to COVID-related bureaucracy. Two other migrants injured in the same attack are also still waiting for justice. \n Lassana’s brutal murder should have been a wake-up call for the Government to end once and for all its divisive rhetoric and discriminatory policies that stigmatise Africans seeking asylum for the sake of pandering to racists. Instead\, three years later\, the authorities are refusing to provide a safe haven to a ship carrying 106 desperate human beings\, all while preparing to welcome the Pope and show off our Christian values. \n Join us in front of the Law Courts to make sure Lassana’s name\, and the injustices still faced by his fellow migrants\, are not forgotten.

We are gathering near the Tritons Fountain at 11.00 a.m. The march will be followed by a few speeches and songs. \n We called the event “Women’s Day every day: Less words more action” to emphasize the necessity of advocating and fighting for actual change to happen. We are demanding strategies to be implemented to sustain long term\, systemic changes that will truly improve the lives of women in society. \n We invite all women and all those who want to raise their voice against gender inequality and sexism to join us. You can bring your own placards and signs. We are all different\, yet everyone faces similar struggles caused by a patriarchal society and we can join forces to change this reality. Ħadd ma kien ġie ikkonsultat dwar dan il-proġett li mistenni jkollu impatti ambjentali u soċjali kbar. \n Ir-residenti u l-għaqdiet se jispjegaw li\, filwaqt li huma jirrispettaw lil min għandu d-delizzju tat-titjir tal-mudelli tal-ajruplani\, pjan ta’ dan it-tip m’għandux isir askapitu tal-ambjent naturali u tal-ispazji miftuħa tagħna. \n Kulħadd huwa mistieden jattendi l-Konferenza Stampa. \n****** \nPRESS CONFERENCE – SAVE WIED ŻNUBER \n Residents of Birżebbuġa\, together with various organisations\, are calling a press conference on Saturday 5th March at 10:30am at the Birzebbuġa parish square to explain their opposition to the massive project in the area of Wied Żnuber \n Wied Żnuber is threatened by plans to develop an airstrip for model aeroplanes that will involve the burying of large areas of garigue\, a long strip of tarmac\, the construction of a clubhouse\, as well as both noise and light pollution that will destroy the serenity of the valley and cliffs. This site and its surroundings are part of the Natura 2000 network – meaning that the authorities themselves recognise it as being ecology sensitive. It is home to various protected species of flora and fauna\, as well as historical sites. \n The project will also result in several farmers being evicted from their fields. \n The plans for this mini-airport were announced several weeks ago after an agreement was signed between the INDIS government agency and model aeroplane enthusiast associations. No other stakeholders or organisations were consulted on a project that is expected to have a significant environmental and social impact. \n Residents and organisations will explain that while they respect model aeroplane hobbyists\, such plans should not go ahead at the expense of our environment and open spaces. \n The press conference is open to all who wish to attend.
