DESCRIPTION:The issue of tables and chairs that are choking our pavements\, squares and streets needs no introduction. Despite the various promises made by the Government that action will be taken against the excessive encroachment of public spaces by business and to restore public access\, effective action and serious enforcement are still nowhere to be seen. \n5 months after we launched the “Il-Bankini taċ-Ċittadini” campaign together with various residents’ groups\, on Sunday 22nd September we shall be meeting again in Merchants Street to take to the streets of Valletta for a Protest March. We will be passing through some streets in Valletta — that look more like an obstacle course with each passing day — to highlight how safe and public access is practically non-existent. \nThe rampant take-up of public land by business is adding to the deterioration of our quality of life. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2024 Abortion Rights Rally on Saturday\, September 28th. \nThe event will begin with a march from Castille Square in Valletta\, at 5pm. After marching through Valletta\, we will gather at La Vallette Square. \nThis year\, in celebration of the fifth anniversary of our inaugural rally in 2019\, we are honoured to welcome two renowned international activists. Joining us will be Ailbhe Smyth\, the esteemed academic who spearheaded the campaign for abortion rights in Ireland\, and Rebecca Gomperts\, a pioneering doctor from the Netherlands and founder of Women on Waves and Women on Web. We are also excited to host a group of activists from Czechia\, known as Ciocia Czesia. As in previous years\, the event will feature inspiring speakers\, music\, and a selection of merchandise\, including t-shirts and tote bags. \nThis year’s theme is ‘Action not Words’. \nPoliticians\, including the Prime Minister\, have been mentioning the need for a discussion on abortion. So far\, these have not translated into any action. Meanwhile\, the hundreds of women in Malta who have abortions every year continue to live in fear\, under a law that condemns them. It is time to move to concrete action that shows that the state truly believes in women’s rights. \nAs the Voice for Choice coalition\, we understand that the cultural and religious values that shape our society make the discussion on abortion a sensitive one. We believe that through open dialogue\, based on respect and empathy\, we can reach solutions that respect the integrity of women in Malta. \nWe are open to participating in this important conversation. SUMMARY:One Year of Genocide
DESCRIPTION:It has been one year of genocide in Gaza and 76 years of relentless oppression by Israel against the Palestinian people. \nThe complicity of many Western countries in Israeli atrocities has allowed this unbearable situation to deteriorate further. Israel has now intensified its brutal aggression against the Lebanese people\, who have long endured the brunt of Israel’s terror and colonial ambitions. \nOn Sunday\, 6th October\, we will gather in Parliament Square\, Valletta\, to express our outrage at this unspeakable injustice. We aim to continue participating in the global movement of solidarity with the Palestinian people and all those targeted by Israeli violence and oppression. \nOver the past year\, more than 42\,000 Palestinians have been massacred in Gaza\, mostly children and women\, while the rest of the population faces starvation and disease. In the occupied West Bank\, Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians have greatly intensified\, and Israeli occupation forces have escalated their deadly assaults on villages\, refugee camps\, journalists\, and activists. \nFrom the outset\, the state of Israel has had a clear project to expel Palestinians from their land in order to colonise it. For Palestinians\, this has meant 76 years of occupation\, apartheid\, and regular massacres. \nHowever\, it has also meant 76 years of Palestinian resistance and a global struggle for the liberation of Palestine. DESCRIPTION:Solidarity vigil outside the Embassy of the United States of America to Malta. We encourage you to wear black. \nWe the undersigned groups and individuals\, concerned about the growing military escalation in the Mediterranean region\, stand here today to deliver our message to the government and people of the United States of America. \nThe catastrophic situation in Gaza\, in Lebanon and the Middle East Region today was not inevitable. The failure to prevent this catastrophe is a horrifying failure of global and western diplomacy\, and will go down on history as one of humanity’s most shameful chapters since the second world war. Further deterioration may still be avoided. \nRecalling the letter sent on 13 October 2024 by the United States Government\, exhorting the Government of Israel to take concrete measures to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza over the following 30 days\, or face a reduction in the military support being funded by the United States taxpayer; \nRecalling the succession of warnings by the UN rapporteur\, by international bodies and by the United States Government of the possibility that war crimes were being committed by Israel in Gaza; \nWe note with the deepest concern that the humanitarian situation has continued to deteriorate further\, most critically in northern Gaza. \nWe further note that the deadline of 12 November\, set by the Government of the United States\, has come and gone\, however the concerns that were raised repeatedly by the United States Government have not yet been translated into meaningful action. \nWe urge you to take concrete steps to stop facilitating\, enabling\, and further aggravating the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe through the supply of weapons and military hardware to the region.

DESCRIPTION:Moviment Graffitti’s Banda are indubitably an iconic part of our history – drumming up beats of resistance in the numerous protests and rallies over the years. As part of Moviment Graffitti’s 30th anniversary celebrations\, our Banda members will be hosting a workshop on the 21st of November at 18:30. \nIt will be held in the exhibition space\, at Società Dante Alighieri at 134\, Old Bakery Street (a few doors down from Drunken Dumpling). \nThe workshop will go through the basics of protest drumming\, including the different sounds and types of drums\, communication signals while drumming\, and of course drumming a short rhythm. \nNo previous skills are required and anyone is welcome to join. The workshop is free\, and donations to Moviment Graffitti are welcome.

Moviment Graffitti\, along with MGRM and YPB\, are organizing a demonstration in front of the Law Courts on Sunday 24th at 3:30pm as resistance to this violence that women face every day\, and to empower women to take a stand against our culture of violence. \nWe are protesting the pervasive culture of violence that is normalised\, in Malta and worldwide\, – the visible and the violence behind closed doors\, the violence concealed behind jokes and the femicides we hear about far too late. For all the women who have been made fun of\, catcalled\, harassed\, and killed. \nBe part of the fight against gender-based violence\, which affects mostly women and girls\, but also non-binary and trans people. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, 1st December\, Moviment Graffitti will be joining other organisations to commemorate World AIDS Day. This is an international day of remembrance for all those lost to the AIDS epidemic. \n\n To mark this day\, a coalition of organisations\, Checkpoint Malta\, HIV Malta\, MGRM\, Moviment Graffitti\, LGBTI+ Gozo\, Allied Rainbow Communities – ARC and aditus\, will be organising We Are Positive: Time for Action – World AIDS Day Rally\, at Castille Square in Valletta at 11.00 a.m.\n The aim of the rally is to give visibility to HIV\, to fight the stigma that still surrounds HIV\, and to give a human face to HIV. The rally will also emphasise the importance of testing for HIV since that is the only way that HIV can be managed. Not knowing one’s status and not taking medication will lead to advanced HIV (AIDS).\nPeople living with HIV face a great deal of stigma to the extent that they often keep their status a secret. As a result\, they have very few sources of support. Additionally\, there is very little public awareness about this topic. Not many people may know that nowadays\, with regular medication\, the virus is controlled to the extent that it cannot be passed on to others during sex. Therefore people with HIV who have access to medication can live long and healthy lives. Therefore\, the coalition believes that HIV medication should be accessible to everyone regardless of nationality and residency status.\n The organisations will also remind the government that it has yet to fulfil its electoral promise of providing free preventive medication\, PrEP and PEP for those who are at risk of contracting HIV and spreading it to others. Malta has one of the highest HIV diagnoses in Europe and there are hundreds of people living with HIV in Malta.\n\nCome and join us in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

This year’s title underlines how women from different social backgrounds\, economic conditions\, and diverse countries share the same struggles. \nOur focus this year is on reproductive justice – the right to not have children\, the right to have children\, and the right to parent children in safe\, healthy\, and sustainable environments. We know that contraception is not accessible enough\, abortion is criminalised\, people with conditions like endometriosis lack care\, and not everyone can afford period products. \nFor people who want to have children – is there enough support? Are people financially stable to be able to have and raise children? Pollution\, over-construction\, lack of green spaces – all of this relates to reproductive justice. \nBeyond reproductive justice\, we cannot ignore women’s everyday reality – facing sexism\, harassment\, stalking\, rape\, verbal and physical violence\, misogynistic comments\, an unjust pay gap and unfair sharing of parenting and housework. Sometimes these are very obvious\, sometimes they are more subtle\, which makes it harder to denounce and address these issues. \nWe must also continue to remember the femicides committed in Malta over the past years. We call for those in power to create meaningful change\, and work towards societal transformation. \nWe – women\, non-binary people\, trans people\, and allies – can use our voices to fight together against gender oppression\, on a symbolic day like Women’s Day\, as well as every day\, everywhere\, for every woman. \nWe will meet at Triton Fountain in Floriana\, walk through Valletta\, and gather in St. George’s Square to have speeches\, songs by the Re-sisters Choir\, and a community dance performance by Fran Zammit\, supported by the Department of Dance Studies at the University of Malta.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at 18:00 on Friday\, 28 March\, in front of the Safi Detention Centre in order to stand in solidarity with our detained brothers and sisters. \nVulnerable people are being detained for up to two years in degrading\, unhygienic conditions without adequate access to legal aid or contact with the outside world. \nVulnerable people\, women and children\, LGBTQ+ individuals\, migrants traumatised by shipwreck\, and people with special needs should never be imprisoned. \nWe call on the authorities to: \n\nRelease all vulnerable persons and children from detention immediately\, including members of our LGBTQ+ community;\nIncrease transparency at Safi and allow NGOs and legal counsels greater access;\nHalt the practice of detaining people for extended periods of time who pose no threat to the community;\nExpand the use of alternatives to detention that are already well-established in Malta;\nHalt the raids that target long-standing members of our community\, whilst providing a pathway for those that remain undocumented to regularise their status.\n\n  \nWe cannot abide and standby as the authorities imprison vulnerable members of our community for years on end in inhuman and degrading conditions without access to adequate legal aid. \nWe firmly believe that all people\, not least children and vulnerable members of our communities\, deserve liberty\, the right to speedy due process and the right to a dignified existence.

SUMMARY:Act NOW Against Genocide in Gaza
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday 29th July at 6:30pm\, we will gather at the Triton Fountain in Valletta and march to Castille Square to demand meaningful action by the Maltese Government against Israel’s mass starvation of Palestinians in Gaza. \nChildren\, women\, and men in Gaza are currently being starved to death. After 1 year and 10 months of genocidal mass murder of civilians – including the deliberate targeting of journalists\, healthcare professionals\, aid workers\, and aid seekers – Israel is now intensifying its genocide through mass starvation. \nImages of children dying from hunger\, and of the elderly collapsing to their deaths while waiting in vain for food\, should trigger the strongest reaction from any human being with even a shred of empathy! \nIt is therefore deeply hurtful and outrageous that Western governments continue either to proactively support the genocidal state of Israel or to take no meaningful action to stop the Israeli-imposed mass starvation of the Palestinian population in Gaza. \nRegrettably\, the Maltese Government is also failing abysmally to take the actions within its power to oppose this genocide. \nIn contrast with other European countries such as Ireland and Spain\, it has consistently failed to condemn Israel’s genocide on the international stage\, has reneged twice on its promise to recognise the State of Palestine\, and continues to allow ships flying the Maltese flag to transport weapons and military material to Israel. \nIn view of this inaction and complicity\, on Tuesday we will be calling for: \n\nA strong and unambiguous stand by the Maltese Government condemning Israel and calling for its sanctioning\, including the cancellation of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.\nThe prohibition of ships flying the Maltese flag from transporting weapons and military material to Israel\, along with a clear and enforced policy preventing ships carrying such material from entering Maltese waters or being serviced by vessels from Malta.\nThe immediate recognition by the Government of Malta of the State of Palestine.\n\nFREE PALESTINE  \nOrganisations:\nEmbassy of Palestine in MaltaĠustizzja għall-PalestinaMoviment GraffittiThe Lebanese AdvocatesThe Watermelon WarriorsYouth for Palestine

No judgement. Just Pride! \nThe premises will be open between 2.00 pm and 4.30 pm. \nWe would love to meet you there! Come and bring others with you. \nPlease note that unfortunately our premises are located in an old Valletta building with steep steps. DESCRIPTION:A national protest\, Ġustizzja għal Artna: Irtirawhom Issa!\, is being called for Saturday 4th October at 10am in response to the total assault on our environment and quality of life being pushed through under the guise of a planning “reform”. \nThe need for action is urgent and dire. Government is intent on forcing through two planning bills and three legal notices that will dismantle existing safeguards\, place serious obstacles to effective public appeals\, and regularise all kinds of illegalities across the country. \nIf this legal package is approved\, Malta and Gozo will be ruled entirely by the wishes of developers\, while the common people will be left under siege from harmful development permitted without even today’s minimal regulatory controls and scrutiny. \nThis is a grave threat to our country\, and only the people’s resistance can fend it off. \nOur demands are: \n\nThe immediate withdrawal of the draft bills and legal notices. Consultation cannot take place on legislation that is fundamentally flawed\, malicious in intent\, and beyond repair.\nThe urgent introduction of a measure suspending works on developments approved by the Planning Authority while an appeal is ongoing\, through an amendment to existing law.\nThe publication of a White Paper to launch a genuine consultation on the broader planning reforms Malta truly needs.\n\nPeople will gather at the Law Courts at 10am and march to Castille\, where speeches will take place. \nThe national protest is the first action announced as part of the Ġustizzja għal Artna campaign launched last week. The protest will start at 5:30pm from the Law Courts and move towards Parliament. \nWe have repeatedly stated that we would much rather sit around a table to discuss the urgent planning and environmental reforms our country needs. However\, despite the people’s cry for justice\, including the thousands who took to the streets on Saturday 4th October\, Prime Minister Robert Abela continues to refuse to listen. \nThis so-called planning reform is a Damocles’ sword hanging over the people’s heads. It is no coincidence that this protest will coincide with the presentation of the annual Budget. Our message is clear: this is not business as usual. \nThe two planning bills and three legal notices pose an imminent threat to our most cherished places\, our communities\, social justice\, and democracy. \nThey would dismantle all existing protections against unbridled construction by rendering planning regulations ineffective and placing full control in the hands of the corrupt Planning Authority. \nThey would also severely undermine the public’s right to effectively appeal illegal decisions\, and strip the Court of its power to revoke illegal permits. \nAdditionally\, the legal notices would grant a blanket amnesty for all sorts of illegalities committed up to last year\, with no limits on type\, size\, or location. \nWe strongly believe that the people have the power to stop this assault on their quality of life and are the last lines of defence against the greed of developers. DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, 30th November at 2.30 pm at Freedom Square in front of Parliament\, a coalition of organisations will be marking World AIDS day which falls on Monday with a silent protest. We will meet in front of parliament to protest against the indifference\, the silence\, the stigma and the misconceptions that still surround living with HIV. We will protest silently with red cloths/ribbons on our mouths\, eyes or ears to symbolise the silence surrounding HIV and the Government’s silence and inaction regarding the promise of free PrEP and PEP\, which are essential medications in stemming the tide of new HIV diagnoses\, continues to harm at risk communities. The silence is deafening. This needs to stop. \nJoin us on Sunday\, bring your placards and your red cloths and ribbons to raise awareness about HIV silence\, stigma and inaction. We ask people to wear red material around their mouths\, eyes and/or ears\, to show that just because one ignores HIV\, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. \nIn Malta\, HIV is now a chronic manageable condition and not the death sentence it once was\, however there are still issues that negatively impact the lives of people living with HIV and those around them. People living with HIV often carry the burden on their own because the huge stigma keeps them from sharing their status with others. Therefore\, they lack the necessary support structures that would help them cope better with HIV. There are still many misconceptions about HIV\, even though today\, HIV medication suppresses the virus to the point that it cannot be transmitted to others\, what we call U=U\, Undetectable = Untransmittable. \nHIV healthcare has improved greatly. However\, there is still much that needs to be done. HIV medication is not accessible to everyone\, due to issues with their residency status\, and the government has still to deliver on its promise to invest in free HIV prevention medication such as PrEP and PEP. SUMMARY:Malta: L-Ebda Mużika għall-Ġenoċidju - PROTESTA NAZZJONALI
DESCRIPTION:We are calling a national protest on Saturday\, 21 February\, at 3pm\, starting from outside Parliament in Valletta. \nArtists\, organisations\, communities\, and members of the public will unite to march for Malta’s withdrawal from the Eurovision 2026 as long as the genocidal state of Israel is allowed to participate. \nIsrael’s conduct constitutes a threat to all of humanity. Its ongoing genocide in Gaza has massacred over 70\,000 Palestinians\, the majority of whom are children\, and has razed the territory to the ground. This genocide follows decades of illegal occupation\, apartheid policies\, settler expansion\, and the mass kidnapping\, expulsion\, and dispossession of Palestinians. Israel is also currently extending its colonial occupation into Lebanon and Syria. \nThe arts and culture sphere – and the Eurovision in particular – does not exist separately from these realities. Cultural platforms are used by Israel to launder its blood-soaked reputation. Last year\, in the midst of the genocide in Gaza\, the Israeli broadcaster allocated a record budget to its Eurovision participation. In contrast\, Russia was immediately barred from the Eurovision following its invasion of Ukraine. \nIsrael should never have been allowed to participate in this competition or to present itself as a normal state while exterminating Palestinians and stealing their land. However\, since the European Broadcasting Union took the shameful decision to allow Israel’s participation\, Malta now has the opportunity to take a stand for justice and international law by joining Spain\, Iceland\, Slovenia\, the Netherlands\, and Ireland in withdrawing from this compromised competition. \nIt is not too late for Malta to stand for justice. Withdrawing from the Eurovision would represent a principled stand against the normalisation of genocide and in favour of freedom\, dignity\, and self-determination. \nOn Saturday\, 21 February\, we will march in Valletta to send a clear message to the Government: we refuse to be complicit in genocide. DESCRIPTION:Join us on the 8th of March in our fight for solidarity\, liberation\, and equality. This International Women’s Day we are marching the streets of Valletta to raise our voices and demand dignity and justice for all women\, non-binary\, and trans folk. \nThe first Women’s March in 1909 grew out of the labour movement as women marched for shorter working hours\, better pay and the right to vote. While International Women’s Day celebrates how far women’s rights and gender equality have come\, it is critical to highlight the erasure of women’s rights across the world\, as well as the effects of gender violence and abuse. \nIn the past years\, women around the globe\, including in Iran\, Palestine\, Afghanistan and Sudan\, have been fighting for their rights amongst war and violence. 1 out of 3 women in the EU aged 18-74 have experienced physical or sexual violence. And women in Malta are still denied their reproductive autonomy due to the criminalisation of abortion. \nWomen face struggles every day\, which is why this year our theme is “Women’s day every day”. \nWhilst women continue to fight for what they deserve\, we will keep advocating for policies and legislations that help women\, we will keep calling out sexist and abusive behaviour\, and we will not stop being loud until every woman is free. \nThe Women’s March will start at Triton Fountain in Floriana at 15:00 and will finish at St. George’s square with speeches\, and live music. \nLet’s voice our anger against the injustices that we face on a daily basis. \nLet’s march together as one voice\, as sisters united in our struggle for change. \n****** \nIngħaqdu magħna fit-8 ta’ Marzu fil-ġlieda tagħna għas-solidarjetà\, il-libertà u l-ugwaljanza. SUMMARY:NAKBA 78 - March for the return of stolen lands
DESCRIPTION:On the 15th of May 1948\, the Israeli State was created. For several months before this date\, Zionist militias began attacking\, killing\, and expelling Palestinians from their land. Israel seized nearly 70% of historic Palestine\, killed thousands of Palestinians\, and expelled 750\,000 Palestinians from their homes. These people and their descendants still live till today as refugees. \nThis is the story of the Nakba – the Palestinian catastrophe carried out by the Zionist colonialism. \nOn the 16th May we will gather at 4:30pm in Gżira to commemorate the Nakba\, condemn the illegal occupation\, genocide\, and raise our voices for a FREE PALESTINE: NAKBA 78 – March for the return of stolen lands \nThe Nakba is not a past event. The Nakba continues everyday through military occupation\, resource theft\, apartheid policies\, sieges\, mass imprisonment\, and ongoing genocide. \nOver the past two years and a half\, Israel has massacred more than 72\,000 Palestinians in the open-air prison of Gaza through bombing and starvation. For the past two years and half we witnessed Israel committing genocide in Gaza. Despite the ceasefire agreement Israel is still attacking and killing Palestinians in Gaza whilst blocking humanitarian aid. \nIsrael has been expanding its borders and seizing more lands from Lebanon\, Gaza and the West Bank with Israeli officials describing this territory they seized as “buffer zones.” In Gaza\, more than half of the Strip’s territory” is under Israeli control. The yellow line introduced by Israel in the south of Lebanon had placed around 16 percent of Lebanon’s total area under its control. \nIn addition\, Israeli military forces are illegally abducting more and more Palestinian people holding them under terrible conditions. Over 20\,000 Palestinians have been held in these terrifying conditions since October 2023. In this period\, at least 110 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody. Currently\, the Israel Prison Service (IPS) is holding 9\,900 Palestinians – approximately 3\,532 detainees held without charge and about 350 children. \nIsrael has burned alive thousands of children taking shelter in refugee camps and hospitals\, and has destroyed everything – homes\, schools\, health centers. It has cold-bloodedly killed thousands of doctors\, nurses\, journalists\, and workers. \nSee you on Saturday\, 16 May\, as we remember the horrors of Zionism and continue the fight for a FREE PALESTINE
