Moviment Graffitti activists stick placards at Home Affairs Ministry ahead of 8 March Women’s Day protest

Activists stuck placards calling for justice in cases of violence against women at the Home Affairs Ministry ahead of the Women’s Day protest march this Wednesday.

The placards showed victims of domestic violence last year as well as signs that read ‘We’re sick and tired’ and ‘Justice delayed is justice denied’.

Over the years, we have seen pathetic police inaction which could have prevented serious crimes such as domestic violence and femicide, lack of information and lack of coordination, as in the case of Bernice Cilia.

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Justice Minister Jonathan Attard have repeatedly promised to implement the right reforms and increase resources, but have failed to deliver.

The theme for this year’s protest, held on International Women’s Day, is Women United Against Injustice (Nisa Magħqudin għax mill-Ġustizzja Mċaħħdin).

This year’s theme was chosen after witnessing several injustices that women in our society face every day, especially when they seek justice through our institutions.

Over the past months alone, we have seen senseless sentences and long years of waiting for action to be taken or for justice to be served – such as in the case of Sion Grech. We have also seen instances of victim blaming, such as the baseless lies in the case of Andrea Prudente.

It is clear: our justice system is actually an unjust system for women.

Women experience injustice because of the inequalities inherent in our patriarchal society.

The protest march will be held this Wednesday, 8th March at 5.30 pm. We will be meeting near the Triton Fountain in Floriana where we will start our protest march to voice our anger at these institutions which are supposed to protect us and to demand that our voices be heard and justice served. The march will end in front of the law courts.

Everyone is encouraged to join us for this march and to bring placards with messages demanding justice.

The protest is being organised by Moviment Graffitti, together with MGRM, Doctors for Choice, Women’s Rights Foundation, and Young Progressive Beings.

The march is endorsed by the following organisations:

Attivisti tal-Moviment Grafitti jwaħħlu kartelluni mal-binja tal-Ministeru għall-Intern ftit jiem qabel il-protesta tat-8 ta’ Marzu għal Jum il-Mara

Attivisti waħħlu kartelluni jsejħu għall-ġustizzja f’każi ta’ vjolenza fuq in-nisa mal-binja tal-Ministeru għall-Intern qabel il-protesta ta’ nhar l-Erbgħa li ġej.

Il-kartelluni juru vittmi tal-vjolenza domestika matul is-sena li għaddiet kif ukoll messaġġi bħal ‘Għejejna u xbajna’ u ‘Justice delayed is justice denied’.

Matul is-snin rajna nuqqas ta’ azzjoni mill-pulizija li setgħet evitat reati serji bħall-vjolenza domestika u anki femiċidji, nuqqas ta’ informazzjoni u ta’ koordinazzjoni bħal ma rajna fil-każ ta’ Bernice Cilia.

Il-Ministru għall-Intern, Byron Camilleri u l-Ministru għall-Ġustizzja, Jonathan Attard ilhom ħafna jwiegħedu li se jimplimentaw ir-riformi meħtieġa u li se jżidu r-riżorsi, imma dan fil-fatt baqgħu m’għamluhx.

It-tema għall-protesta ta’ din is-sena, għall-Jum Internazzjonali tal-Mara hija: Nisa magħqudin għax mill-ġustizzja mċaħħdin.

Din it-tema ġiet magħżula minħabba l-ħafna inġustizzji li n-nisa fis-soċjetà iħabbtu wiċċhom magħhom ta’ kuljum speċjalment meta jfittxu l-ġustizzja fl-istituzzjonijiet tagħna. Matul ix-xhur li għaddew rajna sentenzi u deċiżjonijiet bla sens mill-qrati tagħna, snin twal ta’ stennija biex tittieħed azzjoni biex issir ġustizzja – bħal ma rajna fil-każ ta’ Sion Grech. Rajna wkoll sitwazzjonijiet fejn il-vittma minflok ġiet protetta, taw it-tort lilha, bħal ma rajna fil-każ ta’ Andrea Prudente fejn saru ħafna akkużi bla bażi.

Huwa ċar li s-sistema tal-ġustizzja hija fil-fatt sistema inġusta għan-nisa.

In-nisa jesperjenzaw l-inġustizzja minħabba l-inugwaljanza li teżisti fis-soċjetà patrijarkali li ngħixu fiha.

Il-marċ se jsir nhar l-Erbgħa li ġej, it-8 ta’ Marzu fil-5.30 ta’ filgħaxija. Niltaqgħu fejn il-Funtana tat-Tritoni, il-Furjana minn fejn se jitlaq il-marċ biex insemmgħu leħinna u nesprimu r-rabja tagħna lejn dawn l-istituzzjonijiet li suppost qegħdin hemm biex jipproteġuna u biex nisħqu li l-vuċi tagħna tkun mismugħa. Il-marċ jintemm quddiem il-qorti.

Kulħadd huwa mistieden biex jingħaqad magħna u biex iġib placards b’messaġġi biex nesiġu li ssir ġustizzja.

Il-protesta hija organizzata mill-Moviment Graffitti, flimkien ma’ MGRM, Doctors for Choice, Women’s Rights Foundation u Young Progressive Beings.
