Dysfunctional PN Opposition descends into Barbarism in Public Debate on Abortion

Moviment Graffitti applauds the proposed amendment by the Government to allow pregnancy termination when women’s lives and health are at risk and the peace of mind it will bring to pregnant women on our island. We maintain that the termination of a pregnancy when health is at risk is considered basic healthcare and a basic human right, as held by international medical standards. In spite of this, we assert that this is only the first step and the bare minimum. It is a crucial advance but a still insufficient move towards adequate access to reproductive healthcare.

Primarily however, we are repulsed by the abusive and violent language being used by prominent members of the Nationalist Party in Opposition to debate this important amendment. PN Opposition leader Bernard Grech mocked the surname of Andrea Prudente who lost a wanted pregnancy, one that both she and her partner cared deeply about and wanted to celebrate. Grech questioned her actions before losing a wanted pregnancy and insisted that doctors were ‘more prudent’ then her.

This barbaric disparaging of a woman mourning a wanted pregnancy and a woman at her weakest, signals an unprecedented ethical collapse in public discourse. We therefore hold the leader of the PN Opposition Bernard Grech entirely responsible for encouraging public descent into an aggressive and violent amoralism.

An Opposition leader willing to ridicule and endanger women at their most vulnerable to cling on to political points does not deserve a seat in Parliament. We call upon Bernard Grech’s immediate resignation and a swift apology by the Nationalist Party.

We note that the PN Opposition is aware of its inability to speak to the young demographic it depends on for re-election into power. We also note that the PN Opposition is aware of its insignificance in shaping public debate. Most importantly however, as a conservative party shaped entirely by patriarchal blindspots, the PN Opposition is afraid of giving up the future of Malta and Gozo to women. It deals with its own internal fears, confusions and collapse by resorting to outright public hostility against women.

We insist that European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, in remaining silent on this matter, has failed to use her position of power and the global platforms available to her to shield the women of Malta and Gozo from the public oppression, humiliation and shaming inflicted upon them by her colleagues in the PN Opposition during this dark week.

A political class that lashes out against women when it finds itself losing vision and control is severely compromised and has no place in positions of power. All PN members of parliament, male and female alike, who did not take a position against the hateful rhetoric of their leader Bernard Grech are failed politicians like him.

We reiterate our call for Bernard Grech’s resignation and insist that the Nationalist Party should issue a public apology to Andrea Prudente.

Oppożizzjoni Falluta tiżloq fil-Kefrija matul id-Dibattitu Pubbliku dwar l-Abort

Il-Moviment Graffitti jfaħħar l-emenda proposta mill-Gvern li tippermetti li tintemm tqala fejn il-ħajja u s-saħħa tal-mara jkunu f’riskju. Dan il-pass ikun ta’ serħan il-moħħ għan-nisa tqal fil-gżejjer tagħna. Aħna nisħqu li skont standards mediċi internazzjonali, it-terminazzjoni tat-tqala fejn is-saħħa tal-mara tkun f’riskju huwa servizz bażiku tas-saħħa u dritt uman. Din l-emenda għalhekk hija biss l-ewwel pass u l-minimu. L-emenda hija avvanz kruċjali iżda fadlilhom jittieħdu ferm iktar passi favur aċċess adegwat għall-kura tas-saħħa riproduttiva.

Primarjament, ninsabu diżgustati bil-lingwaġġ abbużiv u vjolenti ta’ membri prominenti tal-Partit Nazzjonalista huma u jiddibattu din l-emenda importanti. Il-kap tal-Oppożizzjoni Bernard Grech żeblah il-kunjom ta’ Andrea Prudenta li tilfet tqala prezzjuża għaliha u li flimkien mar-raġel tagħha, riedu jħarsu u jiċċelebraw. Grech tefa’ dawl ikrah fuq l-azzjonijiet ta’ Prudente fir-rigward ta’ tqala li tant xtaqet u insista li t-tobba kienu ‘iktar prudenti’ minnha.

Kap tal-Oppożizzjoni lest li jwaqqa’ għaċ-ċajt u jipperikola n-nisa fl-iktar mumenti vulnerabbli ta’ ħajjithom sabiex jirbaħ il-punti politiċi, ma ħaqqux siġġu fil-Parlament. Nitolbu lil Bernard Grech jirreżenja minnufih u nitolbu lill-Partit Nazzjonalista jitlob maħfra pubblika lil Andrea Prudente.

Aħna nagħrfu li l-Partit Nazzjonalista fl-Oppożizzjoni huwa konxju li m’għadux jaf jilħaq iż-żgħażagħ li minnhom jiddependi sabiex jerġa’ jsib ruħu fil-gvern. Il-Partit Nazzjonalista fl-Oppożizzjoni konxju ta’ kemm ma jiflaħ iwassal xejn ta’ sinifikat fid-dibattitu pubbliku. Fuq kollox, bħala partit konservattiv mibni fuq limiti patrijarkali kbar, il-Partit Nazzjonalista fl-Oppożizzjoni jibża’ jafda l-ġejjieni lin-nisa ta’ Malta u Għawdex. Għalhekk huwa joħroġ il-beżgħat interni, il-konfużjoni u l-kollass li qiegħed jiffaċċja f’ostilità pubblika fil-konfront tal-mara.

Aħna ninnutaw li l-President tal-Parlament Ewropew Roberta Metsola ukoll baqgħet siekta fil-konfront ta’ dan kollu. Il-President Metsola m’użatx il-pożizzjoni ta’ poter tagħha u l-pjattaformi globali li għandha għad-dispożizzjoni tagħha sabiex tħares in-nisa ta’ Malta u Għawdex mill-oppressjoni pubblika u mill-umiljazzjoni li tefgħu fuqhom il-kollegi tagħha fl-Oppożizzjoni matul din il-ġimgħa sewda.

Klassi politika li lesta tattakka n-nisa hekk kif issib ruħha mingħajr viżjoni u kontroll m’għandha l-ebda post fil-poter. Il-Membri Parlamentari kollha tal-Partit Nazzjonalista, irġiel jew nisa, li ma tkellmux kontra r-retorika tal-mibegħda tal-mexxej tagħhom Bernard Grech huma politikanti falluti bħalu.

Aħna nisħqu fuq it-talba pubblika tagħna għar-riżenja ta’ Bernard Grech u u nitolbu lill-Partit Nazzjonalista jitlob maħfra pubblika lil Andrea Prudente.
